Example
Selecting and
Transferring Audio Tracks
MobileSheets is one of the first android based sheet music reader applications available on the market. It allows you to carry your entire sheet music (or guitar tablature) library with you wherever you go. It also enhances the experience by providing features that all musicians can appreciate - a built-in metronome, music playback from your library, the ability to jump between pages with a single click, and bookmarking. The best part is being able to quickly find the songs you want in seconds, without having to sort through sheet music books or binders. With all these features and choices though, comes a small amount of complexity. This guide will help you understand all of the various features, how to get the most out of them, and will allow you to take full advantage of the tool.
If this is your first time loading up MobileSheets, your library will be empty, and the tool is not nearly as useful (or fun) without songs. The easiest way to load songs onto your tablet is by using the MobileSheets Companion application, which runs on your PC. This allows you to take files from your pc, such as scanned images or PDFs, create songs with them (entering as much detail as you desire for the various metadata fields), and then transfer those songs to your tablet. The process is extremely quick and painless. If you don’t have access to your PC, or want to build your library just on the tablet, then have no fear – all of the same functionality (plus use of the camera) is available on the tablet. To help get you started, a walkthrough of both approaches to song creation will be discussed. Transferring songs using the companion application will be demonstrated first, followed by an example of creating a song on the tablet.
In order to
connect your tablet to the PC Companion, both your tablet and PC must be hooked
up to the same network (i.e. the same router).
If both are connected, first load up the companion application, then load
up MobileSheets on the tablet, and on the main
library screen, click the

Double-click on the entry to start connecting to the tablet. The companion application will show that it is connected by no longer being disabled and by stating, “Ready”. At this point, you can now drag files from your hard drive to the application to start creating a song. When files are dragged over, the song creation screen will appear as follows:

The companion app tries to create a song title based off the file name, but leaves it up to you to enter other metadata. It is recommended to provide an artist and album so that your music can be searched through easier. The more information you provide, the more useful the library features in MobileSheets. Once you are done, click the OK button to create the song, which is automatically transferred to the tablet. Congratulations! That’s all it takes to create a song using the companion app. For more information on all the various options, please see the MobileSheets Companion section.
To get started creating songs on the
tablet, click the
You now have enough understanding to use MobileSheets for the basics – adding songs to your library and viewing them. Once a song is loaded, swipe, touch the edges of the screen, or use the page slider to turn pages. There is a lot more the tool has to offer though, so if you would like to learn about all of the available features, continue reading to become an expert in no time!
MobileSheets provides an assortment of different ways to sort and filter through your library to find the songs you want. It also allows you to group your songs into setlists so that you can load multiple songs at once or just create custom groupings of songs for faster lookup. In order to really use the library features effectively, however, you need to provide extra information about each song called metadata. The following sections will discuss the various options for creating and editing songs and setlists, and the methods for quickly finding desired songs.
Before discussing how to filter through songs, it’s important to understand the data that is available for each song. The following fields can be set for each song:

Source
Type: This field indicates what this
song contains. Possible values are Sheet Music, Guitar Tab, Lyrics, Chords,
Lead Sheet or Other. The default is Sheet Music, but can be changed in the
options.

Instrument:
The instrument associated with the
song, which can be set to “Not Specified” if it is not needed. The default
instrument can be set in the options.
·
Title: The
title of the song – this is how it will show up in your library.
·
Artist:
The artist(s) who created the song. Defaults to “Unknown”, unless the default
is changed in the options.
·
Album/Book:
Defines where the music came from. Defaults to “Unknown”, unless the default is
changed in the options.
·
Genre:
The genre of music for the song. Defaults to “Instrumental”, unless the default
is changed in the options. Custom genres can also be created if desired.
·
Difficulty:
Field indicating a difficulty rating for the song. Defaults to “Not
Specified”, unless the default is changed in the options..
While it’s good practice to enter at least Title, Artist, and Album/Book, you can get more out of the library filtering if you provide more information.
On the main library screen, you will see several dropdown boxes at the top, a search textbox, a series of buttons in the top right, and several buttons at the bottom of the screen. It’s important to first explain the different views which are activated by clicking the buttons at the bottom of the screen. There are six different options for changing what is being actively displayed: Recent, Songs, Artists, Albums, Genres, and Setlists.
· Recent: Displays up to 50 songs recently viewed. This is the first screen showed when the application loads up, allowing you to quickly view sheet music that you tend to load often. The list is in order of song most recently loaded.
· Songs: Displays all of the songs sorted alphabetically. Each song entry also shows the artist and album underneath the title.
· Artists: Displays an alphabetically sorted list of all of the artists who have songs in your library. Clicking on an artist will show all of the Albums/Books for that artist. Clicking on an Album/Book will then show all of the songs in that Album/Book by the selected Artist.
· Albums: Displays an alphabetically sorted list of all of the Albums/Books in your library. Clicking on an Album/Book will show all of the songs in that Album/Book.
· Genres: Displays an alphabetically sorted list of all of the different genres of music that have songs associated with them in your library. Clicking on a Genre will then show all of the songs associated with that particular genre.
· Setlists: Displays an alphabetically sorted list of all of the setlists in your library. The setlists will not respond to any of the dropdown filters, but can be searched by name using the text box. When a setlist is selected, you can either load all of the songs from that setlist, or any individual song from the setlist. This means you can use setlists just to categorize your music if you want!
At the top of the library there are dropdowns that can be used to filter what is being displayed. As mentioned before, setlists cannot be filtered using these. Each of the dropdowns will be discussed below.

To the right of the dropdowns is a search textbox. Typing in this textbox will filter what is being displayed to entries that contain whatever you type. This works for setlists as well. To the right of the search textbox are several buttons. These are as follows:

In addition to everything mentioned previously, there is an alphabetic list on the right side of the screen. Pressing a letter on this list will jump to the section with the matching letter in the main library list. Using all of the features previously discussed, you can quickly find the song you want. Once found, just tap the song to load it.
Adding and editing songs on the tablet is fairly
simple. As mentioned earlier, press the

As can be seen on this screen, you can enter the source
type, instrument, title, artist, album/book, genre, and difficulty in order to
find the song easier in your library. In
addition to that, there is an “Audio File” entry that can be seen. This allows you
to select a track from your tablet’s music library that can be played back
inside MobileSheets. This is extremely useful when
you need to hear the song for reference while learning a new piece (or if
you’ve just forgotten how a section is supposed to go). Click the

If a PDF is loaded, you will be unable to load any other
images or PDFs (only one per song). You
can, however, use the start page and end page slider’s to create songs from
small sections of the pdf. Using one pdf, you
could create several songs, each referencing different pages. If image files are loaded, you can place them
in any order. If you want hands free
playback, you can use the same image multiple times in the list to handle
repeats (i.e. if page three jumps back to page one, you could list the images
as one two three one). To change the ordering of an image in the list, touch
the little drag handle
Images may contain a lot of unnecessary white space in the margins. To get the best viewing experience possible, it’s usually best to zoom in a little to reduce the margins. Drag the zoom slider in the bottom right to see a little zoom outline on top of the sheet music. This will allow you to gauge how much zoom to apply. This zoom is saved per page, so that you can optimize the pages depending on the content. This can be more effective than relying on the global zoom if each page in your song has different dimensions. The global zoom will be discussed later.
If you click the
MobileSheets provides several
methods for creating and editing setlists. The first,
and easiest, method for creating setlists is the Setlist Editor, which can be accessed by pressing the
The second method for editing setlists is found in the Overlay section, as it is only available once a song or setlist has been loaded. Refer to that section for more information.
If you press and hold your finger on a song on the library screen, several options are displayed before you. These are as follows:
· Load Start of Song – This will load the first page of the selected song. This is the usually the default action, but you can configure MobileSheets through the Settings dialog to default to loading the last viewed page. If you do so, this is the only way to load a song from the start.
· Load Last Viewed Page – This will load the song and skip to the last page that was viewed. If the song has not been viewed, it will load the song from the start.
· Load Last Bookmark Passed – This will load the song and skip to the last bookmark that was reached while viewing the song. If the song has no bookmark, this will load the song from the start.
· Edit Song – Loads the Song Editor for this song.
· Add to Setlist – Allows you to quickly add the song to any of the setlists in your library.
· Delete Song – Removes the song from your library entirely. You can also select the checkbox to remove the image files completely off your tablet. Do not do this if multiple songs reference the same files!
If you press and hold your finger on a setlist on the library screen, the following options are displayed:
· Load Start of Setlist – Loads the first song in the setlist at the first page.
· Load Last Viewed Page – Loads the last song viewed, and the skips to the last viewed page in that song.
· Load Last Bookmark Passed – Loads the last song viewed containing the bookmark most recently passed at the page of that bookmark. If no song had a bookmark that was passed, the setlist will be loaded from the start.
· Edit Setlist – Loads the setlist editor and selects this setlist as the active.
· Delete Setlist – Deletes this setlist from your library.
The MobileSheets Companion is an application that allows you to manage your library from the comfort of your PC. You can add, edit, and remove songs, create and edit setlists, and even do things like select tracks from your tablet’s music library or transfer music tracks from your pc to the tablet. To start, the first thing you need to do is connect your tablet to the MobileSheets Companion.
In order to

Clicking on “Add Song” would bring up the song editor to start creating a new song. You can also just drag files from your computer into the window to get the same effect. If you click on Edit Song, the following window will be shown:
On this screen (which is almost identical to the tablet song editor), you can manage all of the song metadata, add/remove files, and select an audio file. One important distinction is that you must set the destination storage location. Depending on the capabilities of the tablet (and whether or not a removable storage location is selected), you can select the tablet internal storage, external storage, or removable storage as the destination.
If you click the browse button next to the Audio File textbox (designated by “…”), the following window will be shown:

The first tab, as shown here, displays every track that was found in your tablet’s music library. Selecting a track from this list and hitting OK enter the data for that track into the song you are currently editing. If you already picked a value, and need to erase it, click the “Clear Selection” button. If the track you want isn’t currently on your tablet, and is on your PC, click the second tab to view the screen shown below:
7 - Selecting a track from your PC
Clicking the browse button will allow you to pick a music file from your PC to transfer. The metadata of the file will be parsed and displayed in the window. A track title will be generated based on the metadata, but this can be edited to be whatever you want to be displayed in MobileSheets. The dropdown at the top is extremely important. If you select the option “Tablet Global Music Library”, the song will be added to the main music library on your tablet that is accessible to all music players and other applications. If you instead select “Tablet External Application Storage”, the track will be moved onto the SD card in the MobileSheets application directory. You can also select removable storage as the destination directory if the removable storage location is set on the tablet. Lastly, if you select “Tablet Internal Application Storage”, the file is moved into the private internal storage location for MobileSheets. If internal or external storage is selected, the track will be removed upon uninstall.
Back on the edit window, you can see various options in the bottom right below the preview image. If viewing a PDF, you can set the page to start at, and the page to end at, giving you the ability to create a song from a small section of a PDF. You can use one PDF to generate multiple songs in this way. You can also set the zoom factor per page. This allows you to cut out unnecessary margins specifically for each page. If you need to see the current page a little closer, you can select the enlarge button next to the zoom percentage. This will take the zoom into account, but it will not accurately reflect what the song will look like on the tablet – it is just for your convenience if you need to see details on the current page.
One thing that should be noted is the “Save Files to Tablet’s External Storage” checkbox. This is only enabled if external storage was detected on your tablet. If this option is checked, images will be transferred to the application directory on the external storage, instead of the private internal data directory. Note that if your tablet has an internal SD card and a separate SD card that plugs into the side, this option will only save to the internal SD card. If you need to take advantage of a second SD card, you will have to transfer the image files manually to that card, and create the songs on the tablet. A future update is planned to fix this to allow you to select the SD card to write to.
In the bottom left of the main window, you can also see a “Convert PDF to Images” button and an “Add After Convert” checkbox. Images load faster than PDFs, so if you have large setlists, you may notice an improvement in load times if you switch to images (at the cost of more disk space on the tablet). Converting to images also opens up the ability to reorder pages if needed, or have duplicates of the same page. If you click the “Convert PDF to Images” button, the following dialog is displayed:
On this dialog, you can set the desired width and height, and the converter will do it’s best to match the ratio you specify. You can also set the desired format (JPG, PNG, GIF, etc). Once you click convert, status messages will be displayed indicating which pages have been converted. It should complete fairly quickly, and you can then click Close to continue. If you check the “Add After Convert” checkbox, it will take all of the converted images, and add them to the song for you.
The last feature that should be discussed on the song editor
dialog is bookmark editing. If you click the
On this dialog, you can add new bookmarks to pages that don’t already have a bookmark, edit the names and pages of existing bookmarks, or delete bookmarks. Bookmarks are a great way to manage large songs, or even to mark songs within PDFs containing more than one.
The MobileSheets Companion gives you the ability to create, edit, and delete setlists. To access the setlist page, click the setlist tab at the top of the main dialog screen. The setlist sections looks like the following:
On the left side, you can see a list of all the setlists that currently exist on your tablet. On the top right, you can see the list of songs for the currently selected setlist. On the bottom right, you can see the list of all songs in your library. To create a new setlist, or to edit the name of an existing setlist, right-click in the listbox on the left side of the screen to access the context menu, and then select “New” or “Rename” accordingly. After entering the name, you can start adding songs to the setlist. There are several ways to do this. The easiest way is to select one or more songs in the bottom right window, and to drag them up to the top right window and release. This will add all selected songs to the list. You can also select songs on the main song selection screen (the first tab), right-click and select Add Song to Setlist. This will bring up a list of all setlists, and you can just click whichever setlist you want to add to. If you have a lot of songs in your library, it can helpful to type in the search textbox to filter the display. You can also select the column to search on, otherwise the default is to search in all columns. To remove songs from the active setlist or setlists themselves, you can either right-click and access the menu option for delete, or just hit the delete key on your keyboard. To rearrange songs in the active setlist, just drag and drop each song to its correct location.
At some point, you may want to back up your entire library in case you need to uninstall, or you may just want the peace of mind of knowing your work will not be lost. The companion app allows you to invoke the backup feature on your tablet, and automatically transfer the backup file to your PC for storage. To access this feature, select File->Backup Library, which will display the dialog shown below:
Select the destination for the backup file, and then click Start to begin. The first step involves the tablet creating a temporary backup file, and then this must be sent over wi-fi. You will see the progress of the transfer, and depending on the size of your library and the quality of the wireless connection, it may take a fair amount of time to transfer the backup file. Once the backup is transferred, you will see a message indicating success.
After a backup file is transferred to your PC, you may want to verify the contents of the backup, or possibly pull some of the files out of the backup. This can be accomplished by going to File->View/Extract Backup. This will load up the dialog you see below:
This dialog can be brought up even when the tablet is not connected. Select the backup file to load, and after the loading finishes, all of the songs in your library and their respective metadata should be displayed. Take note of the output directory shown in the bottom left. This is the same directory as the backup file by default, can be changed if desired. Double-clicking on an individual song will automatically extract that song to the selected output directory. You can also select Extract All to extract every file in the entire library. You can also select multiple entries, and extract them by clicking the Extract button.
MobileSheets provides a number of useful features that makes it more than just a simple viewer. You can access quick setlist features (including adding songs on the go), bookmarks, link points (to deal with repeats of sections), and a full-featured metronome. Some features that will be coming soon include annotation support and chord lookup. Continue to learn about the graphics overlay and the different sections.
While viewing your song in MobileSheets, if you tap on the center of the screen, an overlay will pop up. This overlay provides you with the ability to skip pages, adjust the zoom, playback audio, adjust the setlist, play the metronome, etc. Once you are done with the overlay, you can just tap in the center again to hide it. There is also a sliding window that can be accessed by tapping the handle on the right side of the screen. This sliding window contains most of the overlay content such as the setlist, bookmarks, link points, and metronome. To switch between the content that is shown, you need to tap the buttons shown in the bottom right. While the overlay hides everything by default, you can configure the Settings such that certain pieces of the overlay are always shown if desired. You can see the overlay below:
In case you were wondering, the
Bookmarks are an extremely useful feature when dealing with large scores or PDFs containing multiple songs in them. Bookmarks can be placed on any page (only one per page) and given a unique name. The bookmarks can then be jumped to at any time by touching the bookmark name in the sliding window. The bookmark list is shown below:
To add a new bookmark, click the
Link points are an extremely useful feature that is especially suited for sheet music. Link points allow you to instantly jump from one page to another, preventing the need for frantic page turns when you encounter a repeat (D.S./D.C.). MobileSheets automatically detects when a page is reached that has link points, and will render all of the destination pages in the background so that the transition between pages is seamless. For this reason, that maximum number of links is limited to 10 to preserve system resources (MobileSheetsFree users can only create 2 link points per song).

window, and click the

After the link point is created, you may not be able to see the end point very well. This is intentional, as it would serve little purpose to block visibility of the sheet music. If you click the link start point, it will light up, change pages, and briefly light up the end point before it fades back to transparency. This is to help you identify where you are supposed to start playing.
Link points cannot currently be rearranged in the window. If you need to remove a link point, press and hold on the particular item to be removed, and select the delete option from the menu. This will update the colors of the existing link points, as their position in the list changes.
MobileSheets provides the ability to play audio files for any song in the currently loaded setlist. To access the media player, click the play button in the bottom right of the overlay, and then tap the center of the sliding window. If there are any music tracks associated with the songs in the current setlist, the dropdown will be populated with all of those tracks. You can switch between the audio track that is currently loaded for playback by switching the selected item in the dropdown. The media playback is shown below.

Once the media player starts playing a song, you can hide the overlay, and media playback will continue in the background. To show the player again, you must tap the center of the media playback window. Volume can be adjusted with the tablet volume controls, and if you need to immediately stop the music, hitting the back button will return to the library and instantly stop playback.
MobileSheets includes a fully functional metronome. The metronome allows you to adjust tempo, time signature, beat subdivisions, the sound pack, the first beat accent, and volume. There is also a tap to set tempo button to help you dial in the tempo you require. The tempo slider allows you to make quick adjustments, while the plus and minus buttons on the side adjust the tempo by 1 bpm at a time. The sound pack that is selected determines what sound effect is used for the various beats. The following sound packs are included:
· Wooden Metronome
· Ping
· Digital Metronome
· Hi-Hat
· Kick and Hi-Hat
· Bongo
· Cowbeall
· Metal Metronome
· Woodblock
If the Accent First Beat checkbox is selected, a different sound affect will be used on the first beat of every measure to make it easy to identify. If the save button is clicked, all of the current metronome settings will be saved to the current song. When this song is loaded, the saved metronome settings will be automatically applied. The metronome can be seen in the image shown below:
12 - The MobileSheets Metronome
At the bottom of the image overlay rests the page slider. When only one song is loaded, the page slider shows both the current page and total number of pages for the song. When a setlist is loaded, the page slider shows the current page out of the total page count for all songs on the right side, and the information about the position in the current song above the slider. One of the most useful features is that the slider comes with a preview window that will show you what page you are turning to before you release. The preview window loads almost instantly while using image files, but has a slight delay while using PDFs. This feature can be turned off in the settings if desired, as it can cause the page slider to slowdown while using PDFs.
As can be seen in the image, while the slider is pressed and you move the position, it will actively show you what page you are turning to, what song that page is part of, and the total position of that page among all pages in the setlist. If you like having constant access to the page slider, you can make it always visible in the settings.
While the most efficient way to zoom is to provide specific settings for each page of a song, this is sometimes unnecessary if every page has the exact same margins. Also, let’s face it, not everyone is going to want to set specific zooms for every page of every song in their library. There is also the fact that you usually have to zoom more in landscape mode to take out the margins as there is suddenly more width than height visible. That’s where the global zoom slider comes into play. At the bottom left of the overlay, there is a zoom slider with a percentage value next to it. While the zoom slider is held down, a blue outline is shown to estimate the resulting margins after the zoom is complete. The global zoom slider affects every page that is rendered (and adds zoom in addition to the zoom per page amount). The global zoom is automatically saved for each song independently, so once you view or load that song again, the global zoom will be changed automatically to the last value specified. While the default settings for MobileSheets will be fine for
most users, everyone likes to operate a little differently. That’s why
MobileSheets provides the ability to change various settings that impact song
loading and the image overlay. To modify settings, either click

Most settings are all explained in detail on this page, but some require additional explanation. The descriptions are repeated below along with more detail for some sections.
· Set Removable Storage Location
o
Brings up a dialog that allows you to specify
the location of your tablet’s removable storage. If you do not enter your
removable storage location, it will not be possible to backup songs saved to
removable storage, and the companion app will not be able to save songs to
removable storage.
· Backup Library
o Brings up a dialog that allows you to specify where to backup your library, and whether to backup files saved to external and/or removable storage. Once the backup is initiated, it may take awhile to store all of the pdf and image file data.
· Restore Library
o Brings up a dialog that allows you to load an existing library backup file, and extract all of the metadata and files from that backup file. Once this action is performed, your existing library will be gone. Any files that are currently associated with songs will not be deleted, so it is advisable to clear your application data before performing the restore. This will be fixed in a future update.
· Use Half-Page Turns In Landscape Mode
o Advances half a page at a time while in Landscape Mode. Vertical scrolling is disabled while this mode is active.
· Show Preview During Page Seek
o Enables/disables the mini-preview window that appears while using the page slider to change pages. Disabling can improve performance while using the slider with PDFs.
· Show Page Turns
o Enables/disables the blue line that is visible on the screen edges indicating user initiated page turns
· Background Image Color
o Allows you to choose white or black as the image background color. If you use images with transparent backgrounds, setting the background to white will allow you to see your sheet music normally.
· Always Show the Page Slider
o Determines if the page slider is always visible at the bottom of the screen while viewing a song.
· Always Show the Title Bar
o Determines if the information bar is always visible at the top of the screen while viewing a song.
· Always Show the Pull-out Window
o Determines if the slide-out window is always shown.
·
Disable
Bluetooth While Not Viewing Songs
o
Determines if Bluetooth (if supported on the
device) is automatically disabled so that the virtual keyboard still works
while a Bluetooth device is connected. This is highly recommended if you plan
on using a Bluetooth pedal.
·
Bluetooth
Pedal Mode
o
Determines whether the left pedal turns back a
page, scrolls, activates
the first link point on the current page, or scrolls until the beginning or end
of a page, and then turns the page when the pedal is pressed again.
·
Enable Debounce
o
Ensures that only one pedal command is processed
every two seconds. Scrolling is not affected by this.
·
Automatically
Reload Last Viewed Page
o
If set, when a song is clicked on the library
screen, the last viewed page of the song will be loaded.

While methods have already been discussed for how to create songs using files on the tablet, MobileSheets also has support for directly importing image or PDF files on your tablet while using file managers. If you download a file off the web, and try to load that file, you will see an option to “Import into MobileSheets”. Clicking this option will load up the Song Editor dialog with the selected file already added to the new song. The import option is shown in the following picture:

I am unable to
connect my tablet to my PC. |
Verify that both your tablet and PC are connected to the same network. If problems persist, disconnect and reconnect both the tablet and pc before reattempting to connect. If you are still unable to connect, your router may be blocking either the multicast traffic that is used by the PC to identify the tablet, or the TCP/IP connection that directly connects the tablet to the PC. |

The page slider is
sluggish while change pages |
The page slider is slowed down a little bit while the preview window is rendering images. You can disable the preview window if you want the slider to be more responsive. |

MobileSheetsFree
says I can only add 8 songs, 2 bookmarks, and 2 link points. What gives?! |
The free version of MobileSheets is fully functional, but limits your library size, bookmarks and link points. This is done in order to provide future support and enhancements for MobileSheets, as users need some incentive to upgrade to the paid version. |

I am unable to use
the voice-based searching feature |
This feature requires an active internet connection and voice input capabilities on your tablet. If you know your tablet has voice input capabilities, please connect to a wireless network and try again. |

I made changes to
my setlist in the image overlay, and the changes are gone the next time I
load the setlist. |
If you make changes to a setlist in the image overlay, you must click the save button in order to make those changes permanent. This allows you to make temporary modifications on the fly without messing up established setlists. |

I try to load my
setlist, but only one song is loaded. |
To load all of the songs in a setlist, you must either click the “Load All” option at the top of the list in the library, or press and hold on the setlist and select one of the load options. |
