It would be great if fullscreen mode automatically hid the shelf on Chromebooks. I don't know what kind of programming this would entail, but I've noticed some other Android apps have this functionality.

Have you tried going to Settings->Display Settings and enabling Hide the Navigation Bar? Is that you are referring to when you say the shelf?
