Portrait Mode for HDMI Monitor?
#1
I'm trying to set up an external monitor connected to my tablet via HDMI so my singers can have a little "prompter" on stage using MSP.

I'm researching how to allow the HDMI out to display portrait mode and then rotate my monitor into portrait mode (like a vertical display).

I found this...
https://android.stackexchange.com/questi...al-display

I'm on a Mac and am trying to do what is explained in the answer(s) but not sure how to do it.
I installed Android Studio on my MacBook Pro but unsure how to proceed.

If ANYone has any tips or answers or thoughts ... I'm all ears!

Thanks!

The recommended solution requires that your device is rooted. If you haven't rooted yet, then the rest doesn't matter. Have you rooted your tablet?

I have many tablets
Insignia Flex
RCA
Dragon Touch

I downloaded OneClickRoot and it scanned my tablet and said it was rootable.  It then leads me to purchase the app, I did. $60.  Then I go to root my tablet and it said it can't be done.
I chatted with tech support and they told me I need a PC to do so. I don't have any PC's. All Mac.

So, I'm kinda stuck.

I would not have paid for anything... $60 is a lot, and I highly doubt their software is worth it. You should ask for a refund. Just doing searches I find instructions for those tablets;:

https://androidforums.com/threads/guide-...02.815267/
https://www.stupdroid.com/2017/01/root-t...h-x10.html

I'll need more information on the RCA - what exact model is it? Obviously none of these are one click solutions - you'll have to learn a little bit if you want to root the devices. If you look at this post https://www.reddit.com/r/androidroot/com...iroot_etc/ you'll see that most oneclickroot solutions are not trusted and will often install spyware or bloatware. Newer posts on reddit show that OneClickRoot is in that list. I hope you didn't give them any personal information and paid through something like PayPal.

I used PayPal and they offered me a refund after trying to remotely root my tablets and failing. They said my "build" couldn't be rooted.

Well ... using Impactor and it was never able to finish rooting ... I mustve accidentally hit "fastboot" or something and my tablet booted in fastboot mode and now it's stuck. It won't respond to any hard resets or anything.

There is always inherent risk in rooting tablets. I've rooted a Nexus 10 to install a custom ROM on it along with an HP TouchPad. In both cases, there was a large development community around the devices along with clear, explicit instructions for how to root. The Insignia Flex is not a well known or popular tablet, so there isn't going to be much information about rooting it. I can continue to link to posts I'm finding, but please be aware that this is just me trying to help you with this. I am in no way advising you to root your device, and am not promising that any of the directions I'm linking to will work. Providing assistance for rooting devices is beyond the scope of what I can support for MobileSheets, so I have no plans to do that. If you continue, you must do so with the knowledge that you can potentially brick your devices. It is up to you whether you think that risk is worth taking.

I did find this thread which may be of value:

As far as the device being stuck, have you held the power button for 10-15 seconds? If the device is in stuck in fastboot mode, it may not be easy to fix. It depends what state things are in, and whether the OS is still loadable.

I appreciate the help, Mike. I realize I'm doing all these things at my own risk.  I'm honestly simply trying to use a 24" monitor attached to my tablet to use MSP as a floor wedge ... but have that monitor in portrait mode so I can read pages just like I'd be seeing them on the tablet.

The above forum post is way beyond my scope of abilities in regards to dev.

I'll perhaps post a job on UpWork and hire someone to do this for me.  I have a spare tablet for emergencies so if something gets bricked, it's not the absolute end of the world.

Would this work:

Purchase a Windows 10 Mini PC and run Mobile Sheets on that machine? I can plug my TV monitor into that PC and Windows 10 can rotate the contents of the monitor.

OK. So this is what I'm trying to do. My guess is that it's not possible when the HDMI is connected to a tablet.

I opened Windows 10 on my MacBook and got MobileSheets on it.

I connected the monitor to my MacBook and set the external display to rotate 270º.

Before I go out and buy a Windows 10 Mini PC, can someone confirm that on Windows, the display preferences allow for rotation of displays? I can't change those settings in a virtual machine since those settings are controlled by the Mac.

Yes, you should be able to rotate a Windows 10 display: https://www.howtogeek.com/356816/how-to-...ys-screen/

I think you are on the path to having a good solution.

Hey Mike. If I were to purchase an Andriod tablet that is already rooted, can you guide me through the steps necessary to make this work? I’m assuming that you’ve done it before, and know for certain that it works? Any particular kind of tablet (or Andriod operating system) that I should look for? For me, this would provide the simplest solution. Thanking you in advance.

I can't really provide any more guidance than the link in the first post if you are trying to get it to work on Android. I've never done it before, and I don't know that it will work on all devices. Having said that, I can provide basic guidance on getting things set up to use adb so you can try issuing those commands to your device to see if it works.
