I think it's hard to implement such a kind of "intelligent" logic.
I would rather suggest to let the user choose a certain overlap for page turns (portrait full pages as well as landscape half page turns), so that a certain percentage of the page is visible before *and* after the page turn. You might have to flip pages more often, but that would solve some issues at the same time.
