I've been looking for this sort option (by the Custom field).  After checking through the manual a bit more thoroughly I finally found it, and was disappointed that it was only available on the songs tab.

Would it please be possible to include more fields in the sort options for other tabs?  I'd particularly like to see it for use within collections (I.E. once one has opened a collection, to have the option to sort by the Custom field would be quite helpful to me in some instances.)

I have the custom field filled with numbers. 
Bus if i open een collection it automatically gets the same order as the songs tab.
So im not sure what you did.

What i did: 
Librabry settings: Title format
%CUSTOM% %TITLE%

Unter sort: custom
Use formated title for sorting
By field Custom
