Metronome shuts off between songs in setlist
#1
Hi Mike,

Am really digging MobileSheets. It's incredible how much features you've been able to implement into it, being just 1 developer (and doing this in your free time). You're a powerhouse!

Really looking forward to the 5.0 update for the new UI and especially the rearrange ability (displaying PDF pages in any order I specify). Would love to be a beta-tester, if you still need those.

The bug: When using the metronome, the UI seems to suggest that your intention was that it remains turned on between the songs (when switching from one song to the next in the setlist); which is a feature I'd really want to use (instead of having to start the metronome for every song). But what happens is that when you switch to the next song, the metronome (audio and visual) simply stops, whereas the metronome dialog still shows that the metronome is on (which leads me to believe that that was your intended functionality).

To turn the metronome back on, you need to go into the metronome dialog and press the "Start Metronome" button, which is actually still showing "Stop Metronome" since you started the metronome in the previous song. When you press the button, the metronome reactivates, but the button then switches to showing "Start Metronome"...

So the question is: was it really your intention for the metronome to remain on from one song to another (adopting the metronome settings save for each song when switching to a new song)? If so, could you please fix this bug?

Guess this will be adressed no sooner than in version 5.0, right?

Thanks!

Hello JustMe,

I believe in the current version, my intention was for the metronome to turn off if the song changes. In the next version (v5.0), I think the way it's implemented right now, the metronome will stop if the song changes, unless you set up the metronome to "auto-start" for the song. Having said that, I think the right behavior is probably to keep the metronome playing during song switches, so I will address this.

Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike,

Thanks for replying!

Yes I do think that would be the preferred behavior (I'll refer to it here as "global on/off"). Especially drummers (those that use metronome live and are sheet readers - most of the really good ones do/are) would love this. I'm not a drummer myself though - but I do know a couple of them who think this is the biggest disadvantage to MS at the moment...

There might be a need for an "auto-start per song" feature, but I'd think that need would be pretty "niche". Most practical situations I can think of (practice or performance) would need the metronome either on or off all the time, with a very easy/quick/accessible way of turning it on or off. Toggling it on/off should be a one-button-press action right in the overlay (not hidden in a dialog that has to be accessed first).

It might be handy to have a setting per song to "temporarily disable" the global metronome; that when the metronome is globally on, that song would still not activate the metronome (effectively overruling the "global on" setting for just that song). Useful for rubato songs. But having the global on/off toggle accessible in the overlay would go a long way for this purpose (rubato songs) too, demoting this feature to a low priority.

I hope this little brainstorm of mine helps in some way Smile

Please let me know what you think about all of this.

Also this: I'd think you probably want v5.0 to come out totally blowing people away with features and looks, but please don't get inundated by all these feature requests allowing them to delay releasing v5.0 too much. There's always v5.1 Wink

Cheers!
