I imported old-fashioned piano sheet music in pdf format and I want to change a few chords using MobileSheets rather than editing the hardcopy and re-scanning...

My initial approach to doing that (given it's a non-editable pdf file) is to remove/erase the existing chord symbol and add a new one.  To make the existing symbol go away, can I draw a small white box over the existing chord symbol and then somehow enter the new chord symbol? 

Does this make sense?  Or is there a better way?

Yes you can place a white rectangle over the existing chord (using the fill tool) and then enter the new chord using the text tool.

Where the rectangle is similar size to the text you are entering, it is much easier to just use the text tool with the fill set to white (no need to try and align a rectangle).
If necessary, add spaces to front or back of the text to pad out the "fill area".

Having reread your post, I'm wondering if you intending changing notes (you mentioned chords so I initially took it to mean text e.g. Cdim7).
Yes, you can use a white rectangle to erase an area but unless you are only changing a few notes, this will be very time consuming and fiddly (hint: zoom the area that you are working on before editing).

Another alternative is that you use one of the free online tools that can generate music from a string of text e.g ABC (see https://abcnotation.com/)
This will be more work initially but will probably lead to better results.

Geoff, you might be aware, that I'm a big fan of ABC and have a long standing request for Mike to support it in MSP similar to chordpro.

But writing old time piano sheets in ABC with a double staff, lots of chords etc. is a *lot* of work and nothing for beginners. For a beginner it would probably be easier in a notation software like Musescore (and it's still the same amount of work). I think using the annotation function or even the edit function for changing the PDF is the more sensible approach to do what the OP wants.

To the OP's question...easiest way would be to edit that PDF with a PDF annotation tool (Preview on macOS, Adobe etc. on Windows), and reimport it to MSP.

I hadn't seen ABC notation, but I really like the idea. I frequently add a line or two of staff notation at the top of a chord chart, to detail an intro/turnaround for another instrumentalist. It would be really nice to be able to insert that into a ChordPro.

@ jlgtx: ChordPro can embed snippets of ABC notation - really great to "add a line or two of staff notation" into ChordPro charts.

It's not supported as native by MSP, you have to create a PDF from the ChorPro / ABC source with the ChordPro reference implementation
